multimedia – Being Selfless

At 42 years of age, Anderson has eight kids but only three of them live with him and their mother. For the last ten years, he has kept the sidewalks of downtown Columbia clean, but that is not all he does.

Everyone knows him on Broadway and refers to him as “the character” of downtown. They also know that he would do whatever it takes to get a job or some money.

“My back got me a house, my back has got me car, but nobody gave me anything. I had breaks but I had to work,” he said.

Whatever he does in a day, he thinks about how it will work out in the end for the kids.

“Kids are important. The biggest thing with three kids doing it like I’m doing, it’s self denial, you cannot be selfish, you just can’t be, cause it won’t work,” he said.
